Whether you're a beginner looking to dip your toes into music production or a seasoned professional in need of advanced features and capabilities, we've got you covered. So if you want to make an informed decision on which version of Pro Tools is right for you, keep reading!
What is Pro Tools?
Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation (DAW) that allows users to record, edit, and mix music and audio. It was first released in 1989 by Digidesign, now owned by Avid Technology. Over the years, Pro Tools has become the industry standard for professional audio production due to its powerful features and advanced capabilities.
History of Pro Tools
Originally designed as a standalone software program for Macintosh computers, Pro Tools has evolved into a comprehensive system that includes hardware interfaces for recording and playback. The introduction of plugins further expanded its functionality, making it versatile for various audio projects such as music production, film scoring, and sound design.
iLok
To use Pro Tools software, you need an iLok USB dongle that acts as a security key to prevent piracy. You can also choose to use the iLok cloud version. By all accounts iLok totally sucks! Hopefully one day someone will come to their senses and allow Pro Tools to be authorized to your computer like every other iLok.
Subscription Model
Avid offers subscription plans for users who prefer not to purchase the software outright. This model provides continuous updates and support while offering flexibility in terms of cost efficiency for those who may not require all the features of the full version. By all accounts subscriptions totally suck! Hopefully one day everybody will come to their senses and the subscription model will die a triumphant death.

Subscription vs Perpetual: Which Is Right for You?
Pro Tools Subscription vs Perpetual License
- Pro Tools offers both subscription and perpetual license options.
- The subscription model allows you to pay a monthly or annual fee for access to the latest version of the software.
- With a perpetual license, you make a one-time payment for the current version of Pro Tools and can use it indefinitely.
When deciding between the two options, consider your long-term usage and budget constraints:
- If you prefer frequent updates and tech support, a subscription may be more suitable.
- A perpetual license is cost-effective if you plan on using the same version for an extended period without regular upgrades.
Ultimately, choose the option that aligns best with your workflow and financial goals.
